David's work has received awards, nominations and jury mentions across over 45 countries worldwide, gracing awards at the likes of Abu Dhabi, Brest, Raindance & Cannes Lions as well as an VMA & BIFA nominations, five nominations at Camerimage Festival for the Art of Cinematography and a nomination for the Golden Camera for Short-Fiction at Manaki Brothers Cinematography Festival. David has run cinematography workshops in Greece, Latvia, Romania and the UK as well as being honoured to serve on international film festival juries.
After toying with direction, David quickly found his true passion in cinematography. Honing the craft within short form, whilst assisting and operating, he was attracted to powerful stories. Formally trained in fiction, and an alumni of the prestigious Berlinale Talent Campus, he moved into documentary, commercials and music promos shooting 2nd unit for DPs such as Robbie Ryan BSC, Marcel Zyskind & Anthony Dod Mantle BSC ASC. David was fortunate to be mentored by Phil Méheux BSC.
David's first documentary Red Sands, a stylised study of the emotional paradox surrounding bullfighting, After a controversial premiere, in which David was attacked by an irate member of the public, the film won ‘Film of the Festival’ at Raindance and received a nomination at the BIFAs - the first doc to ever be nominated. It earned several awards internationally & a nomination for the Golden Frog at Camerimage. Latvian doc, The City With a Dirty Face (dir. Peter King) then won Best Doc at Abu Dhabi before Isolation (dir. Luke Seomore & Joseph Bull) premiered at the 63rd Edinburgh Film Festival. It was nominated for the Amnesty Award at CPH:DOX, the Talent Dove at DocLeipzig and selected for the Panorama at Camerimage aside a UK theatrical release to critical acclaim. The Corridor, shot in the Kalahari Desert, was David’s next doc. Produced to raise awareness of a serious tribal conflict and shot in extreme isolation during the aftermath of a murder, the film helped raise £70,000 that bought the tribe their own land in the Kalahari and a flock of 200 sheep.
After shooting several acclaimed short films for directors such as Simon Ellis, Peter King, Luke Seomore & Joseph Bull, in 2013, David shot BFI feature, Bypass, (dir. Duane Hopkins) Starring George MacKay & Donald Sumpter the film premiered at the 71st Venice Film Festival before being nominated for the Golden Frog for Cinematographer's Debut at Camerimage & subsequent cinema release. It then won Best Film and the Grand Prix at Goldeneye Cinematography Festival in Georgia.
David next shot Luke Seomore & Joseph Bull's feature debut, Blood Cells, exploring the psychological aftermath of the Foot&Mouth crisis. Starring Bard Ward & Francis Magee the film also premiered at the Venice Festival before a nomination for the Michael Powell Award at Edinburgh Film Festival and nationwide cinema release.
David recently wrapped shooting new, Netflix Original series The Innocents for directors Farren Blackburn and Jamie Donoughue. Shot over 125 days on location in Norway & the UK, alongside stints at Gillette & Pinewood Studios, the series stars Guy Pearce, Laura Birn & Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson amongst a strong UK & Scandinavian cast. The 8x1hr dark, sci-fi drama is Netflix's first European 4K HDR show and premieres across 140 countries on Aug 24th...
David maintains a careful balance of commercial and dramatic work, travelling internationally and privileged to collaborate with many of the world's top directors & agencies. Aside a Grand Prix & multiple Gold, Silver & Glass Lions at Cannes, numerous British Arrows & D&AD Pencils, his most notorious cinema commercial for Raindance, starring Dexter Fletcher, was instantly banned by the CAA for 'bringing advertising into disrepute.' David has shot promos promos for the likes of Santigold, Azealia Banks & Delilah. His promos have been nominated at Camerimage, Rushes, VMAs, UKMVAs, Vila Do Conde and won the Bronze at Ciclope. David is represented in Europe & Commonwealth by Wizzo & Co. for commercials and promos & WizzoFeatures for drama. In the US & Internationally David is represented by WPA | Worldwide Production Agency.
David was listed as an Ascending Star of European Cinematography in DefintionMag, talent spotted in BAFTA’s Academy Magazine, nominated for a 4Talent Award and has had interviews in both American & British Cinematographer. With production experience across over 30 countries worldwide his portfolio is ever expanding.
